A/B Test Idea: Offering Free Upgrades
You can generate a lot of goodwill and long-term customer loyalty by offering a free upgrade.
Offering a free upgrade is a strategy based on the “give and take” idea: you provide your client with something of value (a free upgrade) so that they are more likely to give something in return (making the purchase or becoming a return customer) as a final nudge to help them convert. The logic of offering free upgrades will be worth any money spent to gain more revenues in the long run.
The Research
A study by Robert Cialdini, the author of Influence: Science and Practice, found that people who were given a free gift valued it much more highly than those who bought it.
You can use this to your advantage by getting your customer to try a free upgrade or sample, and then offering them a chance to buy the full product after they have seen how valuable it is.
Offering a free upgrade is a great way to get the customer to try something new, and then become a repeat customer. The idea is based on the “give and take” idea, that if you provide your customer with something of value, they will be more likely to provide you with something of value in return.
The Experiment
An important distinction to make is that you don’t have to offer a free upgrade to drive the same feeling of satisfaction for your customers. A surprise coupon for a discount on the next purchase will have the same effect.
Giving a bonus gift with the purchase will encourage your customer to come back and buy more. You can also include a bonus gift with the free sample to encourage the customer to purchase a second product. It doesn’t take much to make the customer feel that they are getting a great deal, and if you are giving them a bonus gift or a discount with the sample, it may encourage them to make a second purchase.
There are many ways to implement the free upgrade strategy, but the most important thing is that you make your customer feel that they are getting a great deal. You may have to make a few changes to your product or packaging to make it work, but it is worth it in the long run.
