Above The Fold
Above the fold refers to the part of the page a user can see without scrolling. This part of the page is the most visible and is your users first impression of your page. In this section which is typically around 600 pixels, you should have your most notable content to grab the reader's attention. This content should show the user what they’re looking for immediately so they don’t leave your site and go elsewhere.
This is also a great place to advertise since it’s highly visible and generates more revenue than in less visible locations. The content above the fold should have your call-to-actions or key information about your business such as how you differentiate from competitors.
What Section Is “Above The Fold”?
This section varies depending on the screen it’s displayed on. The size of a screen on different phone versions, tablets, laptops and monitors varies, but it’s whatever is on the screen without the user scrolling. The average fold is usually 1,000 pixels wide and 600 pixels tall.
You can use your website's analytics to inform you of the most common screen type of your users so you can edit your above the fold content to be optimize for that size.
Mobile Considerations
Mobile devices are becoming increasingly popular and can complicate the optimization of above the fold due to the wide variety of screen sizes. Since most people browse in portrait mode rather than landscape, you should ensure you keep that in mind when designing your page on mobile.
Having a responsive design is important to your layout being flexible with images and text appearing correctly. Responsive pages respond to the screen size they’re appearing in. Since mobile screens are also quite small, it’s important to not only have key content on the top of your page, but it should encourage scrolling so a user can see more content on your page. SEO
While having ads above the fold increases visibility, there are negative effects of this. Google's algorithm updates now penalize sites that have too many above the fold ads if the ads force webpage content below the fold. While it’s okay to have select ads above the fold, if sites have too many it can result in less SEO traffic.
It’s also important to test out different ad locations. You can leverage A/B testing to put elements on different locations on your page to test which one has the best performance. This can help optimize your site.
